Haddad Hakansson Project Featured in New Issue of MACO Caribbean Living

This beautiful remake of a 1960s villa on St. Thomas is highlighted in the June issue of island lifestyle magazine MACO Caribbean Living.

The article by freelance travel writer Andrea Milam, called “The Virgin House,” tells the story of the home’s history, why it fell into disrepair and how it was revived two years ago in what Milam called a “brilliant” full restoration.

Haddad Hakansson and the homeowner collaborated with a team of contractors to rescue the villa, built more than 50 years ago by the homeowner’s parents on nearly 5 acres overlooking the iconic Magens Bay.

Once drab and weathered, the villa now sports an unforgettable color scheme, cool and clean marble floors and a bright, open feel.

The home’s vibrant palette was inspired by artist Don Dahlke, a favorite of the homeowner who is known for his masterful use of color in painting Caribbean window views. Dahlke himself visited the home and mocked up several color schemes; Kurt Hakansson and the owner settled on a blue and purple exterior with splashes of yellow.

The design evolved from there. MACO magazine calls the result “a true oasis among the surprisingly busy pace of life on St. Thomas today.”

“We struck a balance between finding things that work here while still meeting the homeowner’s aesthetic appreciation for things that are not traditionally Caribbean,” Hakansson said in the article. “I wouldn’t think to take a heavy red chenille fabric and put it in a location like this, but it works,” he adds, nodding toward the living room’s bold, dominating couch. “You can very quickly become a caricature of what your style is, and we didn’t want to do that here. There’s a simplicity or gentleness to the home… I feel it could just envelop me.”

St. Thomas Villa: The Pool

The pool and grounds took a particularly hard beating from a hurricane several years ago. Replanting, combined with natural regrowth, has brought the forest back to its lush grandeur.  The pool area took a lot more hands-on work.  The same coral tile that was used throughout the patio area of the house was also used… Continue Reading

St. Thomas Villa: Veranda Tranquility

This beautiful property is perched on the hills overlooking Magen’s Bay. In addition to restoring the house, significant improvements in landscaping were needed.  Damage from a hurricane a few years ago, combined with a lack of consistent maintenance, left the surrounding gardens barren in spots and overgrown in others.  Our team of landscapers took to… Continue Reading

St. Thomas Villa: Dining Room

The dining room had more bookcases lining the walls.  We took them out to open up the room for entertaining and used a round extension table where 8 can dine comfortably.  We kept the built-in server on the back wall but had it painted white to match all of the trim. We also added a… Continue Reading
