Creating Outdoor Rooms: The Patio

What’s an outdoor room? It’s any defined and well-designed space for entertaining or relaxing outdoors, and it’s the latest craze in exterior home design.

These days, an outdoor room is more than just a dining table and chairs set out on the patio next to the grill. It can provide shelter, it can provide warmth, it can include a television or even a full kitchen.

The common element is ambiance. An outdoor room is inviting and an extension of the interior, usually a porch or a patio.

A covered patio is an easy area to transform, especially if you are lucky enough to have a stone fireplace! Here, an ample, comfortable all-weather furniture set, a simple hanging lantern and a little greenery is all that is needed.

In this whole house renovation/addition, a covered patio becomes a luxurious outdoor kitchen and dining space, including a large stainless grill with exhaust hood, an undercounter refrigerator, a sink and granite countertops.

An outdoor room doesn’t need to have walls or a roof. Here a simple pergola covered in vines gives dappled shade to a seating area.

Meanwhile, this pergola-and-firepit combination turns a remote corner of the garden into a cozy, inviting spot even on cooler evenings.

These days, nearly every design element has an outdoor counterpart. For drama and elegance, it’s hard to top this hillside patio, featuring outdoor drum chandeliers, simple draperies made of outdoor fabric, a lovely mirror and (presumably) all-weather dining furniture.

Even tiny spaces can be turned into outdoor rooms with beautiful plantings and the right furnishings. Here, a small rear terrace off the kitchen becomes an alfresco dining spot, thanks to a perfectly sized round table. Ornamental trees, mirrored doors and colorful shutters complete the look.
